The Trails of JNR!

By now, you must have heard a lot about our local nature conservation – ‘Jabarkhet Nature Reserve‘ ? It is one of our highly recommended must-visit sites in Mussoorie if you are wanting to escape the hustle-bustle of the city! If you want to hear more about it, let us offer you a detailed write up about this private reserve from the team themselves.

Special guided walks on the 28th – 29th Oct.

The Jabarkhet Nature Reserve (JNR), Uttarakhand’s first private nature reserve, is located just a few kilometres from the centre of Mussoorie. The 110 acre forest, is a unique venture set up by committed individuals to restore and conserve the ecology and wildlife of the region. At the same time, the aim is also to develop a self-sustaining model that provides benefits to local communities and landowners, creating a strong incentive for conservation. Since JNR was opened to the public in 2015, it has had hundreds of satisfied visitors who have expressed delight and amazement at what can be achieved through the passion and vision of a small but dedicated team.

We have worked hard to try and recreate and protect a small area that reflects the natural beauty of the middle Himalayas. Working with the local community, we have reduced pressures on the forest from grazing, lopping and cutting of trees, hunting and unsustainable visitation. After removing hundreds of kilos of trash that was strewn across the hillside, maintaining and defining trails, creating safe havens for wildlife and planting native trees and bushes, we now have a thriving natural paradise that is home to over 120 bird species, over 100 species of mushroom and fungi, nearly 300 species of flowering plants and much of the wildlife that is representative of this part of the Himalayas. There are nine different trails in the Reserve that will take you to different areas to experience different things. Anybody from the ages of 7-70 can explore these trails (and we have had many younger and older visitors as well!).

Just a half-day walk through the Reserve with our expert local naturalists will teach you much about nature that you might not have been aware of. Depending on the season, you can learn about the birds and the butterflies or the flowers and the mushrooms. Our hidden cameras throughout the Reserve will reveal to you the behavior of the secret denizens of the forest including leopards and leopard cats, goral and deer, martens and civets, bears and wild boar – all going about their business in an area where they know that they are safe from human pressures.

If you have more time, we can arrange longer walks for you within the Reserve where you can explore hidden streams and waterfalls or experience the culture and food of local villages nearby. Come and see a different side of Mussoorie, away from the crowds, the traffic and the concrete – and support an important conservation venture at the same time!
